The average human brain packs a hundred billion or so neurons—connected by a quadrillion (1015) constantly changing synapses—into a space the size of a cantaloupe. Neuroscientists of University College London (UCL) have found that there is a simple pattern modeling the tree-like shape of brain's neurons. Our brains are filled with neurons, individual nerve cells connected to one another by dendrites and axons. The goal of this project as outlined in this Neuron paper is to develop the technological capability to measure the spiking activity of every single neuron in the brain simultaneously. But mapping the human brain is nothing like mapping the genome. Conversely, following a signal in the brain, from neuron to neuron, is anything but. One of the brain circuits that enable us to relate to other people is the “mirror neuron” system. DNA is a single straight line, a clear path. The reason a BCI works at all is because of the way our brains function. Cohen, now a chemistry professor at Harvard, is still fascinated with electrical signals—in particular, with learning how they propagate in the brain.
